Counting down to 2012 – European junior championships
Brave, foolhardy, perhaps insane is the pundit who dares to predict where British medals will come from in the pool at the London 2012 Olympic Games, especially given the rip-tidal nature of choppy seas between teenage talent and senior medal hope. Yet some things are certain: the London 2012 generation is out there, the temperature is rising in the birthing pool of champions and Britain has much to be optimistic about.

There are few better barometers in swimming than the European junior championships, the historic results of which read like a Who's Who of the sport - Hargitay, Van den Hoogenband, Pankratov, Polianski, Darnyi, Cseh, Van Almsick, Stockbauer, Mocanu, Egerszegi, Kovacs, Jedrzejczak, Klochkova, to name but a few.

Heartening then to note that half the ten 900-point-plus efforts in women's races at the championships this year, held in Palma de Majorca from July 6-9, came from three individual Brits - Francesca Halsall (Colin Stripe/City of Liverpool), Jessica Dickons (Graeme Antwhistle/Borough of Stockton) and Elizabeth Simmonds (Marc Spackman/Lincoln Vulcans) - and the 4x200m quartet.
